New Yorker Cover Comparisons

The cover of the New Yorker with the beauty pageant has 4 women standing in a row looking to the side as if they are being judged. In my cover there are two people, one man and woman whose faces are not shown and they are looking at a camera. The beauty pageant cover is understood to represent New Yorkers as rude and smug, while other states are open and inviting. The museum cover can represent expression and different point of views. The main difference in these covers is that one is filled with color, while the other has no color at all. Another difference is that there is a man in one, while the other has 4 women. The pageant cover is clear with their message of emotions and expression, while the artwork cover has no clear interpretation and leaves us to interpret it in our own way. The main idea in both is expression, whether it is fully noticeable or not.

New Yorker, "Paint by Pixels" Harry Bliss- April 30, 2007

1. Many different repeating colors.
2. Two people are both looking at a camera with a picture of the artwork.
3. They seem to be tourists in an art museum.
4. No faces.
5. The picture in the camera seems to look different from the big whole artwork.

The name of the cover is "Paint Pixels", in this cover you see splashes of paint all over with no specific meaning to it. You can also see two people standing there, but you don't know why they are exactly in this museum. In my cover there are two people who seem to be tourist standing in a museum taking pictures of artwork that they see. In the photo we can see people, but they have no faces so we do not know if they like the artwork or not. The piece of art has many colors splashed around messily and randomly. Just as there are no definite faces in the cover, there is no definite picture in the artwork. All the covers splashed around can represent different types of emotions of people. The artwork has a definite beginning on the bottom, but no definite ending on the sides or the top of it. In the right corner in the middle of the picture, there seems to be cloud with lighting coming down from it.

This cover can represent how people don't always see things the same way as others do. To any regular person this piece of art would just be splashes of paint, but to the two people standing there, it can have numerous meanings to them. To me, this cover represents how things can be interpreted in many different ways and how we all see the world in different perspectives. The photo is filled with many different colors, but we notice every single color because no color overpowers the other in the picture, this can represent how we all have different ideas, but no ones idea is more superior to anyone elses, since we are all entitled to our own opinions. The smaller picture in the camera can represent how we can look at something and disregard it without seeing the whole picture that is staring right at us.
The major ideas of the picture are colors splashed around randomly, no definite meaning, different perspectives, no emotions, and not seeing the bigger picture in front of us.

Book Interpretation- New Yorker

The book starts off by saying that there are four women standing in a row wearing bathing suits and all looking off into the distance and not making eye contact with the person who would be looking at this cover. They then talk about the woman with the dark hair that is tied up into a bun as opposed to the long flowing hair like the other three women. The women with the long flowing hair each have big smiles, while the dark haired women has her eyes slightly closed that are under arched eyebrows. The dark haired woman has dark eye makeup with sharply angular cheeks with a deep beauty mark and is wearing a two piece bathing suit and not a one piece like the blondes who have full round cheeks. Their breasts are round and full, while the dark haired woman has pointed and angular breasts. Details that repeat are large wide open eyes, long blonde hair, small straight eyebrows, wide open smiles, three banners ending in a, and round breasts, and the shading on the women. The book then connects the photo to the presidential election of 2000 between Bush and Gore and what states supported them in the election. It then states that the women are all looking out into the distance perhaps at some audience or judges. The photo portrays a New Yorker like they are full of themselves, or even represent the dark haired woman as an evil stepmother. The cover can also portray the blondes as being dumb with their wide smiles. It can also represent immigrants as being darker than the lighter Europeans, it can be linked to ancestry and racism. Finally, it can represent Americans as thinking that they are somewhat cooler than others, but that they don't have to be so obvious about it.

The difference between my interpretation and the books interpretation is that they connected to a political stance due to the time that it was printed in. I took the picture and interpreted it as a representation of New Yorkers as a whole. They also connected the picture to a fairy tale, "Snow White" as the New Yorker being an evil stepmother as I just connected to one certain type of person. I interpreted the picture as a representation of people from New York without making any connection to any other person.

New Yorker

1. All women wearing sashes.
2. 3 of them seem to be blonde.
3. The woman representing New York seems to be mad and anti-social and has dark hair.
4. The New York woman has longer arched eyebrows as if she is evil.
5. New York woman seems to not be wearing a dress like the other 3 women.
6. All women have their hair down and flowing, while the New York woman has her hair tied up.
7. The women seem to enjoy life, while the New York woman does not.
8. New York woman is lighter than the other 3 and has a beauty mark.
9. All the women represent a different state.

On the cover I see four women who are each representing four different states. It seems that they are all in a pageant of some sort. You can see all women on the cover and three of them seem to be blondes. The three blondes represent a state and seem to be happy about what they are representing, while the dark haired woman representing New York seems to not like that she is representing New York. The New York woman seems to be evil while the other three seem approachable and friendly. In the photo it seems as if the woman from New York is not wearing a dress like the other three women and she is much lighter than the other women next to her. The beauty mark on the New York woman combined with the arched eyebrows and squinted eyes gives off a much angrier vibe from her.

The cover of the New Yorker gives the woman a distinct look and makes it seem like people from New York are angry and hateful people, who do not like others. The New Yorker gives off the vibe that people from other states are much more social and happier than people from New York. The lighting on the New York woman makes her stand out amongst the other three women because it shows her off and makes her the focus of the picture by being brighter and angrier looking. Looking at this cover one would assume that people from New York are rude and that it is better to live in other states rather than New York. Someone picking up this magazine would assume that people from New York are not social and are angry people. If someone wasn't from New York, they would assume that the cover shows off the true nature of people from New York. The cover seems to want to represent New York as a state of angry people.

Blog Comment Response

I responded to the comments on the blog by adding more details and making new paragraphs on descriptions and why I took the photo. I added in a literal description of the photo and further explained the meaning of the photo to me by adding in more details. I made sure to make my response much more clear and to have a much better interpretation of the photo by adding in smaller details of the photo. Overall, I fixed my paragraphs, added in more details, and explained the meaning of the photo more deeply and thoroughly.

Self-Potrait

While we are walking around anywhere, we never think to stop and look around at what's around us, or to even stop and take a simple photo of what we see. However, while I was walking around in downtown Plattsburgh, I stopped and took all of these photos because they were things that stood out to me while walking around and exploring this new town that I am now living in. When you are in a different place that you have never been in, you often seem to notice the smallest things that would never stick out to you. As you travel in new places, you see how the sidewalk is different, the attitudes of the people, and even the how the smell of the air.

I took all of these photos because living in New York City; you don't really see these things in the middle of the downtown area. In the city, you only see busy streets with people rushing by and very tall buildings that take up almost every block. In Plattsburgh you only see small buildings with people walking around slowly and enjoying the weather. However, in New York you see subway stations on almost each corner with people in the middle of the street rushing to get across or trying to get a taxi to stop for them. While taking these photos, I didn't see any kind of connection between them, or notice how much my environment has changed since leaving the city, but upon further analyzing them I noticed that in almost every picture, something was different and a journey of some sort seemed to be in almost every single one of them, such as the train tracks, two pathways, and the sail boat. Another connection in the photos is stability with the high tower, statue, and the picture of the water. The two most common themes in the photos however are traveling and seeing the world from a new perspective. These photos show how life is really different in other places and that we have grown to know it is not always the same in all parts of the world.

In this image, you see aged train tracks along a path of gravel. The trees surrounding the tracks emit a tranquil scene. The tracks in this image are in an almost perfect vertical line. The shadows show that the sun is in shining from the right side of the image. The tracks appear to fade into somewhat of a horizon line. The power lines next to the tracks indicate that the tracks may have been there for a long time, as well as the rusted color of the metal. This image can represent the journey of life.

Now one looking at this picture would simply say, "What's so special about this picture of train tracks?" We often see train tracks around us many times and think nothing of it because it is so common. Just like I thought, what can be so special about train tracks, there's no person or any kind of words in the picture so what can they mean to anyone? Have you ever thought to relate those train tracks to your life in any way? In the photo of the train tracks, I saw many things in my life that relate to me through analyzing the photo thoroughly. I saw my journey from being a kid into a now growing adult in college, the stability of my life through the tracks being there, and the support and learning from my friends, family, and experiences with the trees surrounding the tracks.

This image shows somewhat rusted train tracks that show age and may even represent life's past experiences and wisdom. A journey is always tough, and there will always be wears and tears, as seen in the rust. Each wooden plank within the track shows that there is always a journey, and always a next step to be taken. In this image, the train tracks seem to fade in the distance, never ending. The scene seems to be a bit aged as well, as shown by the gravel and the telephone wires. The trees show that there is always life around us waiting to help and sometimes even hinder us.

The shadows are also important in this image because it shows that there will always be dark and unknown times. However, that is the special thing about any journey. Just as the track continues past the shadows, we ourselves must pass our own obstacles and learn from them. There will always be light in the end, just as it is shown in the picture. The tracks show the journey of the train, but I believe they represent the journey of life as we grow and learn new things. In the photo, we can't see a definite beginning or end to the tracks. This is like how we don't remember what happened when we were young and how we don't know what’s to happen for us in our future. Eventually our journey will come to an end, and we will leave our trail behind us.

Revision

While we are walking around anywhere, we never think to stop and look around at what's around us, or to even stop and take a simple photo of what we see. However, while I was walking around in downtown Plattsburgh, I stopped and took all of these photos mainly because they were things that stood out to me while walking around and exploring this new town that I am now living in. When you are in a different place that you have never been in, you often seem to notice the smallest things that would never stick out to you. As you travel in new places, you see how the sidewalk is different, the attitudes of the people, and even down to how the smell of the air is.

I mainly took all of these photos because living in New York City, you don't really see these things in the middle of the downtown area. In the city, you only see busy streets with people rushing by and very tall buildings that take up almost every block. In Plattsburgh you only see small buildings with people walking around slowly and enjoying the weather, however, in New York you see subway stations on almost each corner with people in the middle of the street rushing to get across or trying to get a taxi to stop for them. These photos show how life is really different in other places and that we have grown to know is not always the same in all parts of the world.

While looking at these photos and deciding what to use on my blog, I came across this picture of train tracks. Now one looking at this picture would simply say, " What's so special about this picture of train tracks?" We often see train tracks around us many times and think nothing of it because it is so common. Just like I thought, what can be so special about train tracks, there's no person or any kind of words in the picture so what can they mean to anyone? However, have you ever thought to relate those train tracks to your life in any way? In the photo that I took of the train tracks, I saw many things in my life that related to me through analyzing the photo thoroughly. I saw my journey from being a kid into a now growing adult in college, the stability of my life through the tracks being there, and the support and learning from my friends, family, and experiences with the trees surrounding the tracks.

In the tracks, we know that a train travels from one place to another, well in this I see the journey of becoming an adult in it. As we go through life, we do nothing, but get older and older, there is no going back such as when the train goes forward on the tracks, it can't go back to where it came from. In the photo, we can't see a definite beginning or end in it, this is like how we don't remember what happened when we were a baby and how we don't know whats to happen for us in our life. The tracks give off a mysterious vibe because we can not tell if it is still in use or where they exactly go. This is exactly like my life, in which I do not know where my studies in college will take me or what will happen to me as I become independent while being away from home right now. In these tracks I see how my past mistakes may or may not help me in my life because I can't see that they are behind me and I do not know if they will follow me into my future. The tracks to me represent a journey from an uncertain past into a bright unknown future.

These photos show how life is really different in other places and that we have grown to know is not always the same in all parts of the world.

Photo Ranking

The photos that I believe that stand up to the most analysis are the sail boat, the train tracks, the photo with the two pathways, and the photo of the high tower with the eagle on it.

I believe the sail boat can be analyzed because we have no idea what direction it is going. This can represent me in my college freshman year, I have no idea where this year will take me and what is going to happen as I travel onwards. It also can be applied to me because the journey looks to be calm without much turbulence in it, which is what I hope for in my years in college. I hope to have 4 successful years at college and not run into much trouble in the future, although it isn't guaranteed, I'm sure there will be some obstacles just like with the sail boat in its journey.

The train tracks can be analyzed as I'm still going on my journey towards starting my life and becoming an adult, my journey has just begun and has no definite ending such as the tracks in the picture. Even with the tracks having no definite beginning in the photo, can relate to me it is not guaranteed that I will continue on in my studies of communications, or if everything that I have learned in my past will exactly help me reach my expected future. The trees all around these tracks can represent my family, friends, and experiences that have helped me make it to this point time of my life and be the surrounding barrier that is keeping me on this track going forward towards my future.

The photo with the two pathways and the calm and somewhat turbulent water beneath it can represent how I'm not sure what path I will take in my future and if it will always be easy on my way forward. Both of the paths are mysterious, in which we can't tell what they are used for and who exactly uses it. This shows how I don't know what I want to do with my future just yet and what path I will want to take in certain situations. The water below represents how life is not predictable, we will never know where life will take us and how things will be. It also shows how sometimes there will be a struggle, but in the end everything will settle down and fall right into place.

The photo of the high tower with the eagle represents how I want to rise up to success and be that eagle that is on top of the tower. It is above everything on the ground which can represent how someone has risen above all and taken down every obstacle that was in their path. The eagle on top of the tower represents to me success and courage. It takes courage to be the person to make it to the top and take on any obstacle in your way. The spread out wings to me represent how I have gone away from my hometown and family to learn and become independent. This eagle and tower to me represent becoming independent and successful no matter what gets in your way.

The idea and theme that seems to come up the most is the uncertainty about the future and the want to be successful no matter what I face and what will happen because I will take down any obstacle that comes in my way.

The photo that I believe can be used as a self portrait can be the train tracks or the two pathways. I believe the tracks and trees around show how I am traveling towards my future without any certainty about where I am going to go, but that with the support of those around me, I will make it to where I need to go. The pathways can be used also because I'm not sure what path I will take and where the two paths go, but no matter what happens I will make it to where I want to go despite any difficulties.

Photos and Descriptions

The photo shows the Virgin Mary in the center of a field of grass. Around her are many pink flowers, the flowers are there to honor her and show her that she is appreciated. She is all white which can mean that she is being represented as very angelic and pure. Having her put right in the middle with flowers that stand out is done so that we only focus on her and not the objects that surround her. There is light from the sun being shined on her which gives her a glow that makes her stand out amongst the green of the grass around her. Behind her is a dark grey wall which also helps her stand out since the grey in the back pushes the white color of the statue right at us.

Here there is a sail boat that is sailing off to a destination that is unknown. The calm water underneath it ensures that the journey will be a safe and relaxing one. The sun is bright out and provides a nice glow and warmth for the sailors and trees around it. All of the trees and grass around give off a sense that these people are sailing off into the unknown to perhaps discover something new. The many mysterious trees that surround the boat can signify that danger might be in the near future. The main point of the picture is the sail boat sailing off on a journey towards new discoveries and encounters.

This picture we see a body of water without any certain details as to what is on the bottom. The water looks as if it can be dirty, but the light of the sun reflects a clear clean image towards the viewer. In the bottom left of the picture we can see something green in the water which can mean that there is some plant life living in the water or outside of it. The water appears to be calm and settled which can mean that it was a nice relaxing day outside when the photo was taken. The lighting in the picture seems to be fairly bright which can mean that the picture was taken during the early parts of the day. Since the water appears to be so dark and dirty, it can be a mystery as to if something is actually living in the water or if it is really even dirty.

In here, we see trees that are fairly high which can mean that they have been around for a while. In the middle of all the tall leaf filled trees, we see one tree that has no leaves on it, which can mean that it is the oldest tree of all of them. In front of the trees, we see two long bridge-like structures, this can represent our lives and what path we decide to take in our life. The water below these two bridge-like structures appears to be rocking somewhat, which can represent how things in life won't always be so easy, but that in the end everything will calm down and fall right into place. In the bottom left corner we see someone sitting down on the edge of some sort of wall or blockage from the water enjoying the nice day and possibly reflecting on their week and whats to come in their next weeks.

Here we see a big tower that looks as if it is trying to reach up into the sky. On top of the tower we see an eagle that looks as if it wants to fly away or if it is about to go down and attack its prey. We can see the clear sky above which indicates that it is early in the afternoon. Below the tower we see trees that have many leaves on them which shows that they are healthy and blooming. Under the trees we see many people just standing around and enjoying their day, some of these people can possibly be family members or friends. All the people in the picture seem to be gathered around for a certain event that is about to happen.

Here you can see train tracks that appear to be old, in this picture we can't tell if the tracks are still used or if they haven't been used in a very long time. Around are many trees which shows that life is blooming all around these old train tracks. The tracks also seem to go on for a while, which can mean that these tracks were used to go on long adventures. We can see the sun shining down on the tracks which shows that it is still early in the day. Around the tracks we can also see power lines, which can mean that they power a town or once powered a town before. The main focus in the picture is the ongoing tracks with no definite beginning or ending.

Carl Sandburg

Carl Sandburg is a poet who writes poems with some repeating lines and graphic details. His poems are usually about people doing normal everyday things that we would do. His poems from what I know so far are about life and the many things that can happen in life that can change our lives for better or worst. He shows the strength, courage, and vulnerability of the human by writing about a regular event that to would not be so significant to us, but to someone else it could mean everything to them. His poems are usually mysterious and confusing because you don't know exactly what he is talking about which leads you to draw and make your own conclusions after you have read his work.

In his poem 'In a Breath" we see a normal day in the lives of people in a town. They are walking around and some are watching a movie about a shark that gets killed by a human who is brave enough to confront the shark. This poem to me is about how someones life can be ended in a simple breath without much effort. This poem shows how two different things can be happening at the same moment and we would not know because it doesn't affect us at all.

His next poem "The Bath" is about a man who once did not care about life, but after going to a Mischa Elman concert, he cares about life and loves everything about it. The poem shows how one little event can be a life changing event in someones life for their own personal good. The man in this poem sees life simply as flesh on bones with no type of meaning to it. This poem shows how an event can open your eyes up to the world and show you that there is more to life than simply your own personal views. Another key point in this poem is music, after hearing the concert the man sees the world differently, this shows that music can be a life saving instrument rather than just some form of entertainment. This shows that everyone will always have different opinions, but that these opinions can be changed if the right attention is given to those opinions.

I believe that Sandburg writes poetry about the many different things in life that can happen to us whether we think about it or not. He writes to show how something can happen in someones life and not affect us, but affect the other person drastically. His poems usually leave you rereading what you just read and thinking about what he is really trying to convey in his poetry. His poetry can be interpreted in many different ways and not everyone will have the same opinion about what they just read. His writing leaves you free to think what you want and let you connect his writing to your life in whatever way you want to. I feel that he wrote his poetry without any specific endings so that you can make up your own story and draw your own conclusions.

Mini-Paper A

In a Breath: http://carl-sandburg.com/in_a_breath.htm

1. Mentions women in their flimsy clothes two times.
2. Women catching the play of sun-fire on themselves repeats.
3. Life is going on outside of the movie, but in the movie the life of the shark ends.
4. The knife and daggers symbolize how life can simply be ended "in a breath."
5. The people outside living want to see this movie about the sea life and watch this shark get killed, this movie can be like a horror movie, such as Jaws.

This poem is about a normal day in the life of a town, it shows how life can go on while another life ends. It shows how humans can be killed or be the killers. This poem can also show how someone can overcome their fear because it takes a strong person to jump into the water and kill a shark on their own. In the end, the poem shows how life goes on for someone even when death occurs because if the death does not affect them in any way, they are not bothered.

Bath: http://carl-sandburg.com/bath.htm

1. Represents a man who once didn't care about life, but then does.
2. Through going to this concert he has a life changing moment and realizes there is more to life.
3. In the end he sees life differently from when he first walked in.
4. Becomes an optimist after being a pessimist in the beginning.
5. He recognizes life as nothing important because we all end up as bones with no flesh when we die.

This poem shows something can change someones life for the better, it shows how anyone can be helped if the right attention is given to them. This poem can also show how music can be a healer and helper for anyone, the lyrics that he heard at the concert must have touched him in some way. The poem can also represent how someone who wants to commit suicide ends up not killing themselves because of some sort of determent. Through the poem we see how all life no matter who's it is, ends up as bones with the flesh off of them. This is a poem about going through life and how things can change our lives significantly no matter who we are.

Brooklyn Heights

1. Drinking, smoking, reminiscing, and blonde kids playing repeats.
2. The story ends with the same scene it begins with.
3. Shows progression from being a child to an adult.

The poem describes a neighborhood scene throughout the years and some one who has been in this same place since they were younger. Talks about the neighbor hood and how there are little blonde kids around. Mentions drinking and how their leisure time has changed from when they were younger and still maturing. In the end it mentions how a young child will end up playing with a Marlboro Light filter, this can mean that the child gets exposed to something much earlier than they are supposed to. Then the person who notices all that is going on will still get another forty since they won't be changing how they are now.

In the analysis of the poem Brooklyn Heights, both the analysis and I discovered that the author uses groups of twos in the poem, such as 2 fortys, cigarettes, etc. In my analysis I noticed that there was a lot of repetition almost as if someone is reminiscing. In the analysis, I do not believe that the man is forty years old, I see this poem as if the person telling it is a middle age 20 year old man who is simply reminiscing on the times when he was a younger boy. I believe that the burning of the cigarette on the number 5 represents how we end up defeating something that brings us down in our life, in this poem that can represent immature ways or breaking bad habits. I think that the little blonde girl in the end can possibly represent the child that this man may want to have in the future and he is seeing how he needed to grow up and become a better person if he wants to raise a stable and secure family. The friends breaking bottles together can possibly represent a celebration of becoming a new person and being successful in life. This poem to me represents how someone has become better in their life by realizing their faults and fixing them, so that they may become a much better person as a whole.

YourSpace.

The Honda Pilot is a spacious vehicle which means it's for a big family with children. It has many windows so that passengers may travel long or short distances and still be comfortable in it. The car looks sturdy and it can be assumed that it may last a long time and not break down or get severely damaged if it was in an accident. There are doors on both sides so that the family may get into the car without any hassle and decrease time on waiting and increase the amount of travel time that they have.
The lights in the front are made to illuminate any dark path that may be ahead so that anything that is unknown can be seen and detected. The front of the car is made to withstand any incoming impact that may hit it unexpectedly. All four of the tires are made to travel and handle any kind of terrain or anything on the path. The side view mirror is used to see anything that is behind the car so that nothing can damage the back of the car or harm anyone who is inside. The top of the car is made to keep the harmful UV rays of the sun off of the family who would be traveling inside of the car. It has many seats inside so that the family may be seated comfortably inside and not be mashed together uncomfortably. This car is made for a big family who wants to travel safely and comfortably for long distances without dealing with many inconveniences.

-The car is in the middle of the big white space so that you can notice that it is your own personal space that you can call home. The top line "YourSpace" has no space in the middle of it because inside of the car you should feel at home with nothing coming between this sense of security that you feel inside of the car. I feel that the car was made with no background so that you may move it around wherever you like and create your own home for it. Inside of the car, one should feel as if they are in their home away from home because it is their own personal space that they can customize and make their own to suit their personality. I feel that in this car, you should feel as if you can make no mistakes in buying it because it looks as if it is made to last and be there for you no matter where you decide to keep it at in your space.
